Self-Evaluation Speech Critique

How I Improved in Advanced Public Speaking

During this advanced public speaking course, I’ve seen a noticeable improvement in the way I prepare and deliver speeches. At the beginning of the semester, I was nervous, especially seeing the word “advanced” in the course title. I hadn’t taken an introductory speech class, so I came in unsure of what to expect. Sometimes my brain moved faster than the words came out of my mouth, and I felt a bit all over the place, and it was hard to get my main point across clearly. But as the class progressed, I began to understand how to shape a speech from start to finish, opening with intention, transitioning smoothly, and closing, bringing the whole speech together. My wild card speech allowed me to speak about something personal from my background, making the experience feel authentic and empowering. It was the first time I felt completely at ease while presenting, and it reminded me that public speaking doesn’t have to feel like a performance; it can just be me, sharing my voice.

My delivery also got better as I practiced more. As I received each speech critique, I was nervous to see my grade and to see what I did that was wrong. But in Professor Reppert’s class, feedback felt different. Mistakes weren’t viewed as failures, just things to work on. That shift helped me grow. Each critique helped me recognize my strengths and also highlighted small but important areas, like vocalics and pacing, such as some dropped G's and the "you knows" that I could improve, not just for class but in everyday communication. The supportive environment made it easier deliver my speeches.

By the end of the course, I felt more comfortable speaking in front of a group. I learned to slow down, use intentional body language, and connect with my audience. One moment that stood out to me was after my argument speech, when Professor Reppert gave me immediate positive feedback. That simple comment stayed with me and boosted my confidence even further. While I still get nervous before speaking, I now know how to manage it better.

Overall, this course has helped me grow not just as a public speaker but as a communicator in general. I’ve learned to trust my voice, organize my ideas clearly, and present myself with more confidence. The progress I’ve made is something I’m proud of, and I now have tools I can carry into future classes, interviews, and real-world conversations. This experience has shown me that growth doesn’t come from being perfect but from being open to learning and willing to try.
